Here is what I love about the Family Bible Library, why I am so passionate about getting them in the hands of young families and grandparents:

1. They really teach the scriptures. I grew up in an extremely liberal church, and as I read these books to our five children, I learned the scriptures for myself. We have a generation of parents who are pretty ignorant of the very things they believe... They may want to pass on Christian faith, values, and practices to their children, but there are such gaps in what they know that they are ill-equipped even if they are well motivated to give their own children the Word of God.

2. They make learning the big story of scripture really possible. I do not know of another multi-age Bible curriculum that can take children ages 2-14 and give them a comprehensive view of the Bible and the way God has been at work through all time to reconcile this world to Himself.

3. They are the best I have seen in terms of teaching what Godly character is, and in helping to lead children on a path of spiritual transformation. So many of the best educators are convinced we learn best by story, aren't they? (God evidently designed it that way J: most of the OT is story, the Gospels are "story" and Jesus taught primarily by story/parable...) Well, if we want to really teach our children to be Godly, the best stories make the best sense, and the Bible is FULL of them! With all the "backup" tools that Dr. V. Gilbert Beers has included to help parents and children get the point of the stories, I believe we have got a great shot if these books are read aloud day by day, bit by bit of giving our children a large scope imagination made alive by the Word of God, so that the Spirit is free to use the stories to transform the parent-reader and the child...

4. The books are fun! All the sidebar information that Dr. Beers has included both whets one's curiosity and makes the stories more vivid.

5. The supplementary volumes, with the year long reading guide and the 36 Godly character qualities explained (plus all the other things that Vol. 7 & 8 contain) give the parents easy rails to run on... the directions are so simple, that means precious time is spent with the child – reading, talking, rather than trying to figure out what to do!

6. A corollary to this is that Dads can so easily take the lead! As a woman who spends a lot of time with young mothers, this is one of my passions – that they would give their husbands room to learn to lead spiritually; and these books, rather than a wife's directives, can become that guide...

7. They really work! We read the Family Bible Library to our five children and they know the scripture. Four of them now read it diligently for themselves... when we found out we were expecting a grandchild, this was the first gift I wanted them to have... and that's when I found out the books had been redone and were even better than they were thirty years ago!
